A Whoopie Pie at 03:43

A whoopie pie is like a sandwich, but made of two soft cookies with a fluffy white filling. Traditional whoopies pies are made with vegetable shortening, not butter. The most commonly made whoopie pie is chocolate.

Whoopie Pies are the latest cupcakes nowadays. This recipe Whoopie Pie is filled with marshmallow and bakes in just 10 minutes. The marshmallow-soft icing give this cake an old-fashioned character.

The Whoopie Pie was created in Maine back in the 1920s: it shaped like a giant, squishy Oreo cookie, it has two discs of chocolate cake with a creamy-sweet filling. One of the most popular desserts at Becky's Diner in Portland, Maine, is a cake she makes inspired by the Whoopie pie, frosted with a low-cost icing.

Whoopie pie comes from when Amish women in America put them in lunchboxes for the farmers, who would shout 'whoopie' if they found one in their box. A classic whoopie pie recipe made with cocoa (pie pictured on the above) for a delicious chocolate whoopie pie.

History of Whoopie Pies

Whoopie pies are considered a New England phenomenon, they are one of Maine's best known and most loved comfort foods. In Maine, these treats are more like a cake than a pie or a cookie, as they are very generously sized (about hamburger size).

The Whoopie Pies are so huge that you'll want to share one with a friend. A big glass of milk is needed when eating a whoopie pie.

The recipe for whoopie pies has its origins with the Amish and in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania. Amish cooking is about old recipes that have fed families for generations, with no trendy or cross-cultural fusions or mixtures. These cake-like whoopie pies were considered a special treat because they were originally made from leftover batter. According to Amish legend, when children would find these treats in their lunch bags, they would shout "Whoopie!" =D
